Changing Aircraft Registration

What You Need to Know About Changing Aircraft Registration

The most important thing to keep in mind in regards to your plane ownership is that it always needs to be reflecting accurate and up-to-date information in order for it to be valid. It is, after all, tied to you and the airplane. So, if anything related to either change, it will be important for you to make sure the registration is updated accordingly. Don’t worry, changing aircraft registration is not difficult.

Changing Aircraft Registration

If the time comes to update your aircraft registration with new information, you can’t just call the Federal Aviation Administration and ask them to change it for you. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. That’s not to say that it’s hard, but it will involve submitting a form. Let’s take a look at two of the most common changes made to aircraft registrations.

Updating Your Registration’s Information

There is some information tied to your aircraft registration that will always need to be kept updated. Your address, for example, is a very important component of your registration. Just like your car’s registration, the aircraft is tied to your home address (or work address, if it’s a company plane). This means that, should you move at some point, you will need to update the registration accordingly. In order to do this, all you need to do is submit the form appropriately titled “change of address”. All you need to do is provide the aircraft’s identifying information and state what you want the new address to be. This way, the registry will now be updated to reflect your current address going forward.

Changing Plane Ownership

Now, if what you need to do is make changes to the specific ownership of the aircraft, then you will have to do so via the transfer process. This will apply to the situation whether you are selling the aircraft to someone else or you are making partial changes to the ownership registry. For example, if someone is buying the aircraft from you, you will want to fully transfer the registration onto them. However, if the plane was owned between you and your business partner and the said partnership is being diluted, then you will probably need a partial transfer in order to leave one determined owner as of the sole proprietor. Either way, you will need to submit the transfer of ownership form having filled it out accordingly depending on the situation.
