Before you can clear the runway, though, there will be some Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) paperwork matters to attend to. When Do You Need a Reregister Plane Document?
When you buy a plane, it can be a uniquely exciting occasion. Chances are you saved for months or even years to make a dream you have held since childhood come true. Owning and operating an airplane is also a considerable responsibility. The onus is on you to ensure that your plane is regularly cleaned and current on its scheduled maintenance. You also need to stay on top of your FAA documentation, and that all starts with processing your AC 8050-1 – Aircraft Registration Application. This document will call for some basic information about your aircraft, such as its make, model, and serial number. You will also need to provide some basic information about yourself, such as your name and address. Once you have completed this document and submitted it to the FAA’s offices in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, you will be given an N-number, which is sometimes called a tail number. This alphanumeric string of digits, which does allow for customization within certain parameters, serves to identify your aircraft.
When a registration is assigned to a plane owner, it is valid for a period of three years. Six months ahead of your expiration date, the FAA will send you a notice encouraging you to submit a renewal request. They will follow up at two months out if you have not yet submitted your renewal.
