Are you considering joining the elite ranks of aircraft owners in the United States? Is it time to start truly taking advantage of your pilot’s license by flying a plane of your own? If so, you are no doubt experiencing one of the more exciting periods of your life. Having your own aircraft gives you a sense of freedom that is truly unmatched. Being able to take off whenever you feel like it, and jetting off to new destinations every weekend, these are privileges that not many will ever know. Though it is a considerable luxury, owning your own plane also comes with quite a bit of responsibility–though you probably understand this, having taken the rigorous effort to get your pilot’s license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). When you first purchase a plane, and throughout the duration of your ownership experience, you will have to complete FAA paperwork. The first piece of documentation you will likely need to file is what is known as an AC8050-1 form.
When you buy a new motor vehicle or a motorized boat, you have an obligation to obtain a registration. Well, there is a similar process to be completed with the FAA, and that is done with the 8050-1 – Aircraft Registration Application. The FAA is the primary federal aviation agency for the United States. The FAA carries out a number of vital duties, such as managing air traffic control and issuing airman certifications. This agency also maintains a thorough registry of all aircraft that are owned and operated in the United States. As a responsible plane owner, the onus is on you to register your aircraft–which is how you get your N-number–and submit regular renewals. At the National Aviation Center, we can help you do all of this (and more) online. Read on to learn more.
How to Draft an AC8050-1 Form
With the keys to your new airplane in your hands, you are ready to take to the skies. First, though, you will need to take care of registering your aircraft with the FAA. To complete your 8050-1 form, you will need a handful of details about yourself, such as your name, address, and phone number. You will also need to fill in your plane’s serial number, make, and model. Once your registration has been issued, it will be valid for a period of three years. Six months before your registration is set to expire, you will receive a letter from the FAA reminding you to renew.
The FAA will send an additional notice eight weeks ahead of your expiration date as well. These notices will contain a security code, which you will need to provide on your renewal application.
