Determine Your Aircraft Registration Expiration Date to Apply for Renewal

Your aircraft registration is a vital component of your airplane ownership, meaning that without it you won’t be able to fly. This is why it will be so important to pay attention to your aircraft registration expiration date.

Figuring Out Your Aircraft Registration Expiration Date

It’s always a good idea to keep in mind that your aircraft registration has an expiration date, which you can check by taking a look at the certificate. This date will be determined by the time period for which you got the registration in the first place. When filing for initial registration for your aircraft, you had the option to get registration for anywhere from one to five years. Because of this, the amount of time will ultimately depend on what you filed for originally. So, if that date is coming up, you will need to go through the renewal process. Let’s take a closer look at what this will look like.

How to Renew Your Registration?

In order to make sure that your registration doesn’t expire, you will have to submit the form for its renewal. A lot of people’s first instinct will be to either apply for renewal as soon as possible or to wait until the very last moment. We don’t particularly recommend either, since you might end up having your application rejected for being too early or to have to wait for weeks unable to use your aircraft while you wait for your renewal to come in. What we recommend is to wait until you are three months at most ahead of the expiration date, and to submit them before there’s a month left in the registration. If you are within the window, you can use our platform to submit the form to the Federal Aviation Administration.

What if the Registration Expired?

In case that your aircraft registration expired before you were able to submit the form, you need to keep in mind that you can’t go through the renewal process anymore. Instead, you will have to file for something called reinstatement. This is a process for when your registration has either expired or been deleted, and it will bring back the registration and make it valid again. So, if for any reason your registration did expire, this will be the way to go. You will also find this form here on our website for you to directly submit it to the Federal Aviation Administration. Remember that you can’t use your aircraft with an expired registration, so the sooner that you submit this to the FAA, the sooner you’ll be able to fly again.
